It all started with Mallard, the slow down that is.
At Studio 204 in Cabbagetown, very late night recording multiple tracks of pairs of woodwinds - 2 flute, 2 clarinet, 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor..maybe bass clarinets too - recorded at double speed on 1/2” tape..then dropped down at half-speed, bounced and then dropped another half-speed..where the tenor sax timbre changes to contra-bassoon…very interesting pieces..lost..two movements sextet/octet…and then later a kinda revelation when writing the Williamsburg Concertos - and all revelation is private - these composer thoughts only payoff in the listening…this oblique slo-mo music - uber minimalist - this work “ Williamsburg Concerto #2 Quarter Note Equals Four” (1999) for mixed winds - that is one bar equals one minute - then a chamber orchestra work premiered by SEM “move things around/ reduce details/ germinate” (2005) - dark reeds and violas - Dalachinsky collaboration - real cloud texture work - process textures - continued experiments with long tone, long form wind music with Rock Center (2008) for wind trio. Then a series of works from 2013 onward - garden music research series - of these a trilogy of works - “Red Shed” (2017), Golden Garden (2018), and “Trinity Vector” (2019)…and now 2020. “ninety summer triads’”…unbelievable..continuing to find the peace the music and thru peace love…
